Translating the Local

Bio

Hi everyone! I am a poet and translator in my first year in the Comp Lit PhD. I’ve worked on the poetry of Joyce Mansour, a Jewish-Egyptian Surrealist, and am largely interested in avant-garde 20th century poetics in particular French and English. You can read those translations here and some of my poetry is findable here.

One of my favorite books on translation is Johannes Göransson’s book Transgressive Circulation where he theorizes versioning as the most accurate vision of translation and lays out the ways in which society’s suspicion of translation might be traced back to its abilities to introduce an unravelling force into the markets of meaning: “meaning is the gold standard ensuring the value of language, while language is a currency otherwise susceptible to nonsense, inflation, chaos”. I appreciate this book and others for the way in which translation theory reveals what is true about all literatures.
