Translating the Local

Introduction – Sheila

Hopefully I’m doing this right! I’m Sheila (reads Shay-la), and I’m in my first semester in the MALS program, focusing on Literary Translation. I’m a Brazilian Quilombo descendant and an educator, interpreter, and translator. I’m especially interested in the connections between language and culture, Black feminism, and Transatlantic literature. I speak Portuguese, Spanish, and English, and I’ve been particularly interested in vernacular languages such as AAVE, Pretuguês, and Jamaican Patois, as a research topic of mine is how to ethically translate racialized languages and literature.

Beijos,

Sheila.
